Wherever you go along the Sicilian coasts you will meet \u00a0one of these silent witnesses of the relationship between Sicily and the sea, marvelous monuments , which have had \u00a0little attention and are not very visible because they are part of the Sicilian atmosphere. We have selected some among the 119 sighting towers, among more than eighty tuna fishing centres \u00a0and the ancient salt pans, they are all \u00a0treasures to be discovered. Everywhere \u00a0breathtaking landscapes.<\/p>\n<p><strong>1) PALERMO \u2013The Tower of Rotolo<\/strong><br \/>\nThe Tower of Friar John or \u00a0tower of Ruotolo is located on the \u00a0Rotolo top, between the Addaura and Virgin Mary, on the seafront Christopher \u00a0Columbus, in the place of Virgin Mary, a fishing village of Palermo. Built on \u00a0the behest of the Royal Court during the first decades of the 15th century, it is one of the coastal watchtowers\u00a0 of &#8216; short range &#8216; together with the Tower of Capo Zafferano, the prickly pear \u00a0Tower, the Tower of Priola, the Tower of the tuna fishing centre of the Virgin Mary and the Tower of the tuna fishing centre \u00a0of Mondello.<\/p>\n<p><strong>2) FAVIGNANA \u2013 <\/strong><strong>Former Florio plant<\/strong><br \/>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/fenici.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/EX-STABILIMENTO-FLORIO-654x420-1.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-1733 size-medium lazyload\" data-src=\"https:\/\/fenici.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/EX-STABILIMENTO-FLORIO-654x420-1-300x193-1.jpg\" alt=\"ex-stabilimento-florio-654x420\" width=\"300\" height=\"193\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;base64,PHN2ZyB3aWR0aD0iMSIgaGVpZ2h0PSIxIiB4bWxucz0iaHR0cDovL3d3dy53My5vcmcvMjAwMC9zdmciPjwvc3ZnPg==\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 300px; --smush-placeholder-aspect-ratio: 300\/193;\" \/><\/a>A visit to the former Florio plant \u00a0is essential for those who want to experience a journey into the glorious past of the tuna fishing centre \u00a0and \u00a0what it \u00a0represented for the development of the island of Favignana and Sicily. The former Florio plant \u00a0is a real \u00a0jewel of industrial archaeology , here are safeguarded \u00a0the equipment, anchors and boats of slaughter \u00a0inside a place \u00a0had become \u00a0one of the most flourishing canning tuna processing industries. They also tell the story of a great Sicilian family.<\/p>\n<p>(<a href=\"http:\/\/www.regione.sicilia.it\/bbccaa\/soprintp\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">www.regione.sicilia.it\/bbccaa\/soprintp\/<\/a>)<\/p>\n<p><strong>3) MARSALA &#8211; The salt pans \u00a0of the lagoon\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/fenici.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/IMG_8128-630x420-1.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-1735 size-medium lazyload\" data-src=\"https:\/\/fenici.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/IMG_8128-630x420-1-300x200-1.jpg\" alt=\"img_8128-630x420\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;base64,PHN2ZyB3aWR0aD0iMSIgaGVpZ2h0PSIxIiB4bWxucz0iaHR0cDovL3d3dy53My5vcmcvMjAwMC9zdmciPjwvc3ZnPg==\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 300px; --smush-placeholder-aspect-ratio: 300\/200;\" \/><\/a><\/strong><br \/>\nThe salt pans of the lagoon stretch in the area of the natural reserve of the Stagnone Islands, they create one of the most original and fascinating landscapes \u00a0of Sicily, a unique area facing the island of Mothia. From Trapani to Mozia it is a succession of tanks, \u00a0example of an interaction between man and nature. The density of the salt in the water changes the colours \u00a0of the reflections and at sunset is becomes an exultation of \u00a0colours , worthy of the best photographers in the world.<\/p>\n<p><strong>4) VALDERICE \u2013 Tonnara di Bonagia \u00a0( Tuna fishing centre)<\/strong><br \/>\nThe Tonnara of \u00a0Bonagia overlooks a tiny marina that formerly was used as \u00a0shelter for fishing boats. Integrated into the buildings of the tonnara, \u00a0there is a watchtower, among \u00a0one of the most beautiful in Sicily. It is a square building which now houses the Museum of the Tonnara, \u00a0where there are kept, together with archaeological finds found in the sea, work equipments and a model depicting a trap with nets used to catch tuna and the chamber of death.<\/p>\n<p>(<a href=\"http:\/\/www.turismo.trapani.it\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">www.turismo.trapani.it<\/a>)<\/p>\n<p><strong>5) PORTO EMPEDOCLE \u2013 Tower of Charles V<\/strong><br \/>\nThe Tower of Charles V was built in 1554 to defend the most important magazine on the island. The Tower has\u00a0 been used for a long time as a prison: in 1848 it was the scene of the massacre of 114 unarmed prisoners , reported and let be known by the famous writer from Empedocle, \u00a0Andrea Camilleri in his\u00a0 work\u201c The forgotten massacre\u201d. Today it is used as a cultural centre. Porto Empedocle also gave birth to Luigi Pirandello, at those times, \u00a0the actual city was a neighbourhood of Agrigento. Therefore there is \u00a0the opportunity to join the Writer\u2019s Road which \u00a0leads \u00a0to Santa Margherita Belice, town of the Leopard \u00a0(Giuseppe Tomasi di Lampedusa) and to Racalmuto, the town of \u00a0Leonardo Sciascia. But from the terrace of the Tower of Charles V, \u00a0in Porto Empedocles, \u00a0it is possible to see far ahead.<\/p>\n<p>(<a href=\"http:\/\/www.comune.portoempedocle.ag.it\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">www.comune.portoempedocle.ag.it<\/a>)<\/p>\n<p><strong>6) The town PUNTA SECCA \u2013\u00a0 Scalambri Tower<\/strong><br \/>\nThe Scalambri Tower \u00a0is a coastal defense tower and it is located in the town of Punta Secca, in the province of Ragusa. It consists of \u00a0three floors, and once it was part of the defensive system of sighting of Turkish, Saracens and barbarian ships and it was a visual link with other neighbouring towers: to the West, with the Tower di Mezzo of \u00a0Santa Croce Camerina and with the Tower Vigliena of Punta Braccetto; to the East with the\u00a0 Cabrera\u00a0 Tower in\u00a0 Marina di Ragusa. It is not much different from the other towers displaced along the Sicilian coast, but it became the subject of visits thanks to the fiction of the Commissar Montalbano, becoming for a lot of people \u00a0the Tower of Montalbano\u2019s house.<\/p>\n<p><strong>7) MARZAMEMI- The tuna fishing centre of Marzamemi <\/strong><br \/>\nThe Tonnara of Marzamemi, built in the 16th century, is one of the oldest and most important tuna fishing centres \u00a0in eastern Sicily. The current village consists of the Prince&#8217;s Palace, the camperia (the scieri Lodge), the Church of San Francesco di Paola, \u00a0the old tuna factory and of about fifty fishermen&#8217;s houses, all gathered around the large piazza Regina Margherita. A film location, it is located in a truly exceptional and fascinating area. Here time stood \u00a0still. \u00a0The landscape is unique.<\/p>\n<p>(<a href=\"https:\/\/marzamemisicilia.com\/tonnara-marzamemi\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">marzamemisicilia.com\/tonnara-marzamemi\/<\/a>)<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><strong>8) NOTO \u2013 Tuna fishing centre and \u00a0Swabian Tower of Vendicari<\/strong><br \/>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/fenici.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/torre-sveva-vendicari-300x225-1.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-1736 alignleft lazyload\" data-src=\"https:\/\/fenici.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/torre-sveva-vendicari-300x225-1.jpg\" alt=\"torre-sveva-vendicari-300x225\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;base64,PHN2ZyB3aWR0aD0iMSIgaGVpZ2h0PSIxIiB4bWxucz0iaHR0cDovL3d3dy53My5vcmcvMjAwMC9zdmciPjwvc3ZnPg==\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 300px; --smush-placeholder-aspect-ratio: 300\/225;\" \/><\/a>In the natural environment of the Vendicari reserve it is possible to \u00a0admire the remains of great charm of the ancient tonnara and the Swabian Tower, built by Pietro d&#8217;Aragona, close to the beach. But Vendicari is one of the sites of excellence in Sicily, \u00a0both from the naturalistic point of view and from the landscape and cultural ones.<\/p>\n<p>(<a href=\"http:\/\/www.riserva-vendicari.it\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">www.riserva-vendicari.it<\/a>)<\/p>\n<p><strong>9) ACIREALE \u2013the Sentry\u00a0 shelter of Saint Tecla<\/strong><br \/>\nThe first historical records of the village of Saint \u00a0Tecla date back to the 13th century. From the sixteenth century, \u00a0due to a few raids of Turkish Corsairs , it was built a \u00a0guardroom with \u00a0a square plan and a \u00a0pyramid covering topped by a ball made of basalt and four battlements at the corners, that still can be admired in all its charm. This location was chosen as a symbol of a wonderful coastline, a unique path between land and sea.
