Inauguration of the new tour route of the prehistoric site of Delia – Marcita, Sicily

Prehistoric cultural itineraries in the Belice Valley” to relaunch the territory: inauguration of the tour route of the prehistoric site of the Marcita alla Trinità di Delia – Castelvetrano, by the Rotary Club Castelvetrano Valle del Belice, the Phoenicians’ Route – Cultural Route of the Council of Europe, Selinunte Archaeological Group, PAM First Mediterranean Archeology Association

The presentation to the public of the new tour route of the prehistoric site of Marcita took place on Friday 25 June, within the Forest Reserve of the Delia District, in the territory of the Municipality of Castelvetrano (TP). Thanks to the collaboration between the Rotary of Castelvetrano – Valle del Belice, the Archaeological Superintendence of Trapani, the Trapani Rural Development Section of the Regional Agriculture Department, the Phoenicians’ Route – Cultural Route of the Council of Europe, the Selinunte Archaeological Group and the PAM Association of Partanna, new explanatory panels have been placed that will help the visitor to better understand the path that concerns three archaeological areas with cave tombs and a still mysterious area with 13 axial dimples. In fact, as part of the initiatives to enhance the so-called “minor” heritage of the territory, following the publication on the prehistoric heritage of the Belice Valley by Rotary, it was considered useful to create supports and tools useful for a better use and understanding of a site still little known, even by the local community.

The excavations in Marcita, started by Prof. Sebastiano Tusa in the 1980s and continued by numerous other archaeologists, have brought to light a very interesting area from a scientific point of view. The new tour route is a small contribution to the knowledge, especially by the local communities, of the heritage present in its territory.

During the inauguration, those present, led by Prof. Vito Zarzana, Vice-president of PAM and author of the recently presented Guide, were able to visit the new tour route and observe the new explanatory panel.

In addition to Prof. Zarzana, the archaeologist Alberto Scuderi, National Vice President of the Archaeological Groups of Italy and Regional President for Sicily, and Luigi Lentini, Honorary Inspector of the Regional Department of Cultural Heritage, collaborated on the scientific part.

Present at the inauguration the President of the Rotary Club Castelvetrano – Valle del Belice, Anna Maria Raineri and the Director of the Phoenicians’ Route – Cultural Route of the Council of Europe Antonio Barone, the latter also as Director of the Selinunte Archaeological Group.
